Yes, most pallet racking installations in New Zealand are considered part of the building’s structure, which means they require a formal building consent. The consent application must include structural drawings, load‑calculations, floor slab verification, and anchoring/base‑plate details. If the racking is high, custom, or part of a major warehouse refit, an engineer’s design statement (PS1) and sign‑off (PS3/PS4) may be required to meet compliance and safety standards.
Racking must be installed by a competent supplier or manufacturer and meet the design and material standards defined in AS/NZS 4084. The installation should include: secure floor anchoring or bolting, a level and strong concrete floor slab, adequate aisle width for forklifts, clearances from lighting/fire‑safety systems, and visible safe working load (SWL) signage. After installation, racking must be used correctly: pallets must be in good condition and properly placed, load limits must be observed, and operations (loading/unloading) must follow safe forklift and handling practices.
Ongoing Support and Racking Inspections
In accordance with New Zealand Health & Safety regulations and WorkSafe guidelines, storage racking inspections should be conducted at intervals not exceeding 12 months by competent inspectors. Additional inspections can be scheduled based on your operational needs. At Cemac, we provide comprehensive industrial racking inspections to ensure your storage systems remain safe, compliant, and efficient, giving you peace of mind and maintaining the highest workplace safety standards.
